Cannupa Hanska Luger: American Traditional is on view through October 24, 2026, at 10 Greene Street, New York, NY.

The sculptures in American Traditional are rendered in a uniform matte-black palette. Made from an ironstone clay body with applications of sumi ink and direct flame, the all-encompassing monochrome is mournful, even elegiac, standing in marked contrast to the bright colors that typically define the artist’s work. Precise arrangements of found objects—including Buffalo nickels, Pulaski axes, railroad spikes, and concertina wire—are combined with ceramic replicas of a skinned pronghorn deer, a stack of bison skulls, and a severed Sharps Model 1874 sporting rifle. The works evoke specific episodes in the troubled history of Western expansion, simultaneously deconstructing and eulogizing the dream of dominion while transforming its material remnants into forms that are elegant and destabilizing.
