Serge Alain Nitegeka’s Shadowing Black is on view in Cape Town through October 3, 2026.

The sculptures, paintings, and installations in Shadowing Black build on the concept of propulsive uncertainty explored in Finding Black, the artist’s 2022 exhibition addressing liminal space and the unknown in the dark. In that exhibition, Nitegeka balanced linear and organic forms, placing figures within abstract fields as part of his exploration of Black as a material concern, phenomenon, and philosophy.

As the artist states:

“Exploring the states of the unknown in my practice is an ongoing process. My practice trails Black both as a colour and as a metaphor for the unknown, the unseen and the felt. Observing where Black is and is needed is the process, and following it intuitively is the art. Black, as a guide and an exercise, is manifest in my approach to making art; led by the unknowns – Shadowing Black.”
