Thomas Demand’s exhibition is now on view at Matthew Marks in Los Angeles, presenting seventeen new photographs across the galleries at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard.

The new works continue Demand’s Model Series, in which he photographs models created by architects, designers, and artists. For this exhibition, Demand has photographed 18th- and 19th-century models for opera and ballet sets held in museum collections in Vienna, Monaco, and Munich. Using a periscope to navigate the miniature scenographies, he transforms the delicate paper maquettes through carefully arranged light and shadow, highlighting stage sets originally made for Wagner’s Tannhäuser, Rossini’s Guillaume Tell, and Peter Ludwig Hertel’s ballets.

The exhibition also includes recent photographs of Demand’s own compositions, depicting everyday scenes such as an overcrowded bookshelf and reeds reflected on the surface of a pond. These works are printed directly onto copper, drawing on the material’s art-historical associations with Renaissance painting and early printmaking.

Thomas Demand is on view through November 7, 2026, at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles, Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–6pm.
