What happens when art starts to look a little too real?

You get Hyper Realism, a term that appeared in the early 1970s to describe highly realistic, lifelike sculpture and painting. 👀

This sculpture, 'Spooning Couple' by Ron Mueck, shows an eerily high level of realism, from the texture of the skin to the careful placement of individual hairs. Mueck frequently experiments with the scale of his sculptures — some of his works are larger scale, but 'Spooning Couple' is approximately half life-size. Before working as an artist Mueck was a puppet and prop maker for television and film, where he developed his precise techniques.
